The ownership decision

Rent is a line item. Steel you own is an asset.

Plenty of Christiansburg operations end up renting storage for years without ever deciding to. A heavy season fills the building, a box goes out back, and some time later it is still out back and still on the monthly bill. If that is the yard behind your shop off the I-81 interchange, the question is not whether you need the space. It is who should own the steel.

Our published crossover sits at about 18 to 20 months. Somewhere in there the monthly payments already made add up to the price of the steel itself, and every month beyond that is rent on something the business could have owned. For a retailer holding overflow inventory, a warehouse out of rack space, or a contractor who wants a locked box that stays put between jobs, the horizon runs longer than that. Buy versus rent works the arithmetic through, including how rent already paid can be credited if you rent from us today.

If the arithmetic looks close on your own numbers, the fastest way to settle it is a real figure rather than an estimate. Call (276) 237-6144, Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and we will put one in front of you the same day.

What the number covers

One figure, and nothing bolts onto it afterward.

A used cargo-worthy 20-ft is $3,200 delivered. A used cargo-worthy 40-ft is around $4,900 delivered. Christiansburg sits well inside the 75 road mile zone where delivery and leveling are free, so distance is not one of the things that moves either figure.

A welded steel lockbox is already on the container. It goes on before the box leaves the yard, on purchases and rentals alike, and it sits inside those figures rather than beside them. For the layers that go on top of it, read our container security guide.

  • Delivery to a Christiansburg address, covered
  • Set and leveled on blocks, covered
  • Welded steel lockbox, already fitted
  • Wind and watertight, with the doors working when we hand it over

Delivered prices in Virginia sets those figures in context, and the main sales page covers every size and grade.

Choosing a grade

On a commercial lot, the box is part of the storefront.

A container behind a barn is judged on whether it locks. One beside a retail entrance, a customer parking area or a fenced contractor yard on a main Christiansburg road is judged on how it looks, and, on parcels outside the town limits only, by a county ordinance carrying a screening standard written for storage containers. The ordinance fixes no height, no fence type and no plant list, so it is a call to the right office rather than a spec you can read.

A used cargo-worthy unit is structurally sound and weather tight, wearing the scuffs and rust bloom that years of ocean freight leave behind. A one-trip has made a single ocean crossing and looks like it, and it typically runs several hundred to a couple thousand dollars more than a used box of the same size. On a back lot that premium is hard to justify. On a visible one it usually earns itself back.

Container grades explained defines the vocabulary, and used cargo-worthy and one-trip show what each is actually like. If it is getting company colors regardless, paint and branding changes the calculation.

Sizing the purchase

Buy the square footage, not just the footprint.

Renting, the size question is mostly about what will fit. Buying, it is also about what you get per square foot, and between a 20-ft and a 40-ft the longer box wins that comparison by a clear margin if the operation is still growing.

The counterweight is ground, not money. A 40-ft takes meaningfully more straight approach to place than a 20-ft, and the room the truck needs is larger than the room the box occupies afterward, so measure the approach before you settle the size. Delivery preparation has the clearances.

20 ft versus 40 ft compares them side by side and price per square foot shows why the longer box carries the better rate.

Placement and changes

Where it may sit, and what you may do to it once it is yours.

Town line or county ground

Montgomery County has an adopted countywide zoning ordinance, unlike Carroll and Wythe counties. It applies to the unincorporated area only, and Christiansburg is one of the county's two incorporated towns, so a parcel inside the town limits answers to the town rather than the county. A Christiansburg mailing address does not prove a parcel is inside those limits, and out toward the edges that catches people. Inside those limits, the town's zoning ordinance has its own section on portable storage containers, Sec. 42-662, and whether a container you buy and keep falls under it or under the town's accessory-building rules is the town Planning Department's call, so ask before you buy; our Christiansburg permits and placement page quotes the section.

Our Montgomery County permits page has the offices, the questions worth asking and the screening language, and the Virginia overview covers the statewide building code side. We do not pull permits. They attach to your parcel.

Changing a box you own

Ownership is what unlocks the box. A man door, vents, shelving, a window, an electrical rough-in: all of it gets cut and welded at our Woodlawn yard, on a container you already own as readily as on one you are buying now. Power work stops at the rough-in here. Making it live and getting it inspected falls to a licensed electrician where you are, never to us.

There is deliberately no modification price sheet on this site, and modification cost factors explains why. Every change is itemized on a written quote, with its own timeline, before anyone picks up a torch. See what we build.

Christiansburg ownership questions

Owning one in Christiansburg, answered.

A used cargo-worthy 20-ft is $3,200 and a 40-ft is around $4,900. Christiansburg is well within the 75 road mile ring, so nothing is added for the drive. Delivery, leveling on blocks and the welded steel lockbox all sit inside those numbers. The only levers left are which size and which grade you pick.
If it will sit where customers and neighbors see it, look hard at one-trip. It has made a single ocean crossing and shows very little wear, while a used cargo-worthy unit is sound and weather tight but shows the wear that years of ocean freight leave behind. A one-trip typically runs several hundred to a couple thousand dollars more than a used box of the same size.
Not by itself. The Montgomery County zoning ordinance applies to the unincorporated area only, and Christiansburg is an incorporated town, so a parcel inside the town limits is governed by the town instead. Plenty of properties with a Christiansburg mailing address sit outside those limits, so confirm which side you are on before choosing a placement.
Yes, and that is one of the real advantages of owning rather than renting. Man doors, windows, vents, shelving, paint and an electrical rough-in are all things we can cut and fit at the Woodlawn yard, on a box you already own as readily as on one you are buying today. Electrical goes as far as the rough-in and no further. Your own licensed electrician energizes it and takes it through inspection.
What we keep on the ground is 20-ft and 40-ft. Anything else, such as a 10-ft, a high cube, a double-door or an open-side, is a specialty size we source to order. Tell us what the job needs and we will say plainly whether we can get it.
