A Christiansburg store or warehouse that runs short of room for a few months a year can rent the space instead of owning it: a 20-ft container at $165 a month or a 40-ft at $235 a month, month to month with no contract. Work out of it until the rush is over, then call for the free pickup and stop paying.
A seasonal rental in Christiansburg goes smoothest when the container is on the lot before the extra stock shows up. Once pallets start arriving, every aisle and back hallway fills, and a delivery truck backing into a crowded loading area is the last thing anyone wants to direct. Get the box set while the lot is still quiet, and the first shipment has somewhere to go.
At about 58 road miles from the Woodlawn yard, Christiansburg falls inside the free zone, which reaches 75 road miles, so the drop and the leveling cost nothing. The truck sets the container on blocks and levels it so the doors swing and seal the way they should. The drop date gets scheduled on the call.
Size is the one decision worth making before the drop. A 20-ft gives you about 160 square feet of floor, a 40-ft about 320. A store holding boxed overflow usually thinks in shelves; a warehouse holding pallets usually thinks in floor. Either way, count the stock you expect at the peak of the season, not what is on hand on the day you call.
During the season, the rented container is a stockroom that happens to sit outside. Staff restock from it the way they would from a back room: heavy, slow-moving stock deeper in, the things you pull every day near the doors. The welded lockbox is already on the container when it arrives, as it is on every box sold or rented, so the padlock you choose closes up the stock at night without anything extra to order.
The rent runs $165 a month for a 20-ft and $235 a month for a 40-ft. There is no contract and no end date to name. If the season stretches into another month, the container simply stays another month at the same rate, and if it ends early you owe nothing for the months you did not use. How the month-to-month arrangement works in full is on our container rentals page.
When the last of the extra stock is sold or moved back inside, you call, the pickup goes on the schedule, and the billing stops. Pickup is free inside the 75 road mile zone, the same as the drop. The lot goes back to how it looked before the season started.
Buying a container starts to beat renting one somewhere around 18 to 20 months of rent. A single season sits well short of that. A store that needs extra room for a few months of the year pays only for those months, gets its back room back when the rush is over, and never has a box sitting on the lot through the slow months. Rent paid year after year does add up, though, so a store that rents every season should count the months across the years, not just the current one.
That changes when the need stops ending. If the container you rented for one season is still behind the building a year later with stock in it, the math has moved, and the case for owning belongs to our page on buying a container outright in Christiansburg. The full comparison, month by month, is in the buy vs rent guide.
Rent credit is real, and a season that turns into a keeper does not start from zero. What you have paid in rent can often count toward buying that same container. The terms are not posted anywhere on this site, so raise it on the phone and get the figure for your case.
On a store or warehouse lot, a container belongs where it does not take parking from customers or block the lane your suppliers back into. The rules for that spot come from Montgomery County or from the Town of Christiansburg, depending on which side of the town limits the parcel sits, and we do not file anything with either. Inside the town limits, the town's own zoning ordinance governs a container on a store's lot: Sec. 42-662 requires permits for portable storage containers, apart from the exemptions it lists, and allows one "up to 14 days in any one year period", so talk to the town's Planning Department before you plan a season on an in-town lot, including whether an exemption reaches your lot and your use. Our Christiansburg permits and placement page quotes the section, and the county offices are on our Montgomery County permits page.
